The Nokia N96/N96-5 is an external hardware based mobile phone with barcode reader and camera functionality. It is based on the Nokia E75 / N97-1 platform. The Nokia N96 supports Nokia Series 60 (version 3.0) and Symbian^3 (version S60 3rd Edition). The N96 supports MP3/AAC/AMR audio files, WAV, TMP3, MIDI, OGG Vorbis audio, WMA, APE, RA, MP3/AAC/AMR, JPG, GIF, PNG, and EMF graphic files. The phone supports the WAP 2.0/3.0/3.1 and SMS protocols, but only as a regular user. The Nokia N96 is a 5 megapixel camera. This is a major upgrade as the N97 / E90 is a 3 megapixel camera. The N96 (as of 2008) has a 1 GB internal memory. There is also a microSD (up to 32 GB) memory card slot which can be used as a second internal memory. The Nokia N96 has an integrated GPS receiver which allows for location-based services, such as directing you to the nearest bank, restaurant, shop or petrol station. The GPS receiver also supports A-GPS which allows for the detection of GPS satellites even indoors. The Nokia N96 has a barcode scanner on the back of the phone. The phone has a 5-way navigator (just like the N95) and a 4x zoom camera. The N96 can be charged via the Nokia AC-30 power adaptor or through a USB cable. The Nokia N96 can be connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or via 3G. The Nokia N96 comes in a range of colours. This is a less expensive alternative to the N97. The Nokia N96 has an extensive amount of features and is a great alternative to the N97 Nokia E61 (RM-506/506e) The E61 is a mobile phone with a 2.2 megapixel camera and microSD card slot.
